Recent Events
Members of the Smithson Society community have recently enjoyed these special opportunities:
February 2009 – Fritz Scholder
Members were treated to a special after-hours viewing of Fritz Scholder’s Indian/Not Indian exhibition at the National Museum of the American Indian. The unique style of the artist is reflected
in this distinctive exhibit of 135 paintings and other works on display from Scholder’s forty-plus year career.
December 2008 – O’Keeffe and Adams at SAAM
New members, and at those at the Sustainer level and above,
had the special opportunity to attend an after-hours private reception and viewing of Georgia O’Keeffe and Ansel Adams: Natural Affinities at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
October 2008 – Sant Ocean Hall Opening and Reception
Members at the Partner level
and above were invited to attend a special reception and private viewing of The Sant Ocean Hall, a new
23,000-square-foot exhibition at the National Museum of Natural History. The new permanent exhibition serves as
the centerpiece of a new Ocean Initiative that will bring international attention to the complexity
and importance of the ocean. The Sant Ocean Hall was created in partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
April 2008– James Smithson Society Annual Members’ Weekend
The 32nd Annual Members’ Weekend gathered Smithson Society members from all over the country at the
Smithsonian for three days of enrichment and social gatherings with Smithsonian leaders, scholars,
and fellow members. The weekend consisted of special behind-the-scenes tours and culminated with a
cocktail reception in the Smithsonian Castle and a black tie dinner in the Enid A. Haupt Garden.
